Socialist Republic of Vietnam Claimed
When Saigon, the capital city of South Vietnam, was captured, the Communistic North had complete control over the government of this country. Vietnam was officially known as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on July 2nd of 1976. In attempt to make everyone work together as one country, the government created a movement of collectivization of factories and farms. Many believed this would boost the economy of Vietnam, but this campaign backfired and the already delicate economy was only weakened and increased prices of all trade. The cost of the Vietnam War was more than a government could repair in just a few years; over two million military men and civilians lost their lives and four million were wounded in the process. Aside from the injuries, half of the population remained homeless and the war ruined 70% of the nation’s trade sources.
In Vietnam, there are still unexploded mines buried within the land, terrifying the Vietnamese Citizens. Also, many southerners feared the government, for any citizen opposing their political view would be imprisoned. Any opposing political activity or just the assumption that someone might be an opponent would be incarcerated. Even though the country was unified, many disagreements would divide the citizens. This problem still occurs today and the Vietnam War still has a huge impact on the country forty years later.
